We felt that this fell under the Disability as a burden and disability as pity functions.
The character's ex-wife and son have come to visit him. The fact that the son has his back to his dad symbolises that they don't really accept him as a part of the family. This allows the audience to be sympathetic towards the man with the disability and also shows that he's like a burden to the family. The ex-wife picks at her tea as though there is something wrong with it because the disabled man made it.
A medium shot is used to represent the man's isolation and vulnerability in contrast to the close up shot of his ex-wife who seems the more dominant character. The setting is cluttered which shows that the man is not capable of doing certain things and needs support this makes the audience pity him.
The ex-wife also recognises that the character hasn't been washing properly which reinforces the idea that he is struggling with everyday life.
The man gets up and goes to the room. He becomes frustrated quickly which shows his frustration at not being treated like a normal human being.
